Chris from San Jose asked

What’s you favorite "comfort food” you have had on the road?

This week's episode of the Amateur Traveler talks a lot about Southern food as we go to Little Rock, Arkansas. Travelers often ask what is the weirdest thing that you ate but this is almost the opposite, when did the food bring you "home" to a home you never knew?

Prague does heavy meats and potatoes incredibly well. I ate duck almost every night served with vegetables and potatoes. It was heavy, flavorful, and warmed me up.

Oh yes, the Czech penchant for duck makes it very hard not to indulge.

We stayed across the street from the St. Nikolas church and ate at many of the restaurants along Malostranské Námêstí and Mostecká. Most were small, dimly lit, but cozy and warm - very homey and comfortable. That lent itself to the food, but the food - almost all of it was that hearty hot rich food that is "comfort food" to me. Duck, venison, potatoes, veggies, rich gravies and sauces. Go back, Chris. The food really is phenomenal.

I go to the same countries a lot, so oftentimes it's one type of food per place/region.

E.g. I've just come back from Czech Republic, where I subsisted almost entirely on various types of cooked cheese: grilled, deep-fried, pickled. Never thought I'd get into it, but there you go.

In Thailand, it's coconuts. Which is more of a comfort drink, since cold coconut water is such a staple there.

In Mediterranean countries, I double up on hummus, because one generous serving is enough to make you stop craving food for the rest of the day. Also, falafel - such a treat. And how can one forget the trusty doner kebabs?

Also, whenever I have the cash, I splurge on steaks, regardless of where I am. It's horrible and unsustainable, sure, but incredibly nourishing.

At the Wynn Hotel Las Vegas Casino Buffet in Las Vegas you cannot beat them for exotic food selection. I enjoy the sliced cold crab legs. No battle zone. The salads in glasses are sweet as well. Outstanding food.

I just came back from a trip of the Southwest US. I went to a New Mexican restaurant called Maria's of Santa Fe, and they had delicious green chile stew. The pork chunks were tender, and the flavors absorbed into the broth. Tastes like mom's homemade soup. I ate with sopapilla bread and honey drizzled over (as recommended- it's a great combo). It was so good, I got seconds.

I love green chile stew. I am not sure everyone would put that down as comfort food. :-)

After our time living in Taipei, being able to find good dumplings, especially good Xiao Long Bao, or even just good Dim Sum is always a treat that helps us remember our great time in Asia.

The "comfort food" that I would love to find on the road, especially here in Europe, that would let me feel home, as in back in the US, would be good Buffalo wings.  I really have not yet found any that would let me feel like home out here.

In my travels it would either be the steak and baked potato mentioned by Seolsfgirl or good Bar-B-Que and home made potato salad.  As much as I love trying new thing, those bring me back to home.

We just returned from a Southern Christmas Tour - a road trip that we decided to do.  Two Sister's Kitchen in Jackson Mississippi was amazing Southern Comfort food.

Having lived in Charleston since I was 10 1/2, I've grown to love shrimp and grits, which is pretty much Charleston's national dish.  About 3 years ago my cousin and I took a side trip to Rome when I was visiting my relatives in Liverpool over summer holiday.  I had a craving for shrimp and grits, so one afternoon we were having lunch at a trattoria I can't remember the name of and I asked the waiter if it was possible for the chef to sautee some prawns and serve them over polenta mixed with parmigiana cheese and top it with some puttanesca sauce.  It tasted just like traditional Low Country shrimp and grits, but with an Italian twist.  Molto bene!

I'm veggie and when I'm on holiday I end up eating a lot of pizza, cheese and tomato sandwiches, veggie burgers if I'm lucky, that kind of thing. We ate at a curry house in Reykjavik twice during our stay and we've eaten curry in Lisbon and Riga too. I've never been to India but Indian food tastes like home because we eat so much of it in the UK. I wish more places had curry houses!
