A nice trip report, but your guest was misled at the museum in Ecuador. It’s a myth that sinks and toilets drain in opposite directions on either side of the equator. The Coriolis Effect only operates on the large scale, affecting weather systems with hurricanes in particular, but being totally ineffective toward smaller things.
