Delta Inflight Entertainment

My family and I flew Delta to the East Coast last week and I had a chance to try out their new inflight entertainment system. The system offers 20 movie choices, 24 live television channels, 1600 songs and 10 video games. Movies are free in first class, and $5 each in coach.

The live television was a nice feature but the quality of the signal was sort of like having old rabbit ear antennas. In addition to the signal being poor, when you fly in the middle of the day you get daytime TV. So… perhaps the bad signal was a gift.

Most of the games also cost in coach, but there was a trivia game that was free. The game allow you to compete with others on the plane which could be a great way to spend the time for the competitive know-it-all types. In my defense I came in 2nd in the first game but I did start late. I won the 2nd game and probably the 3rd game but the pilot was rude enough to arrive seconds before I would have found out if that guy in 40D answered that question correctly (unless he did I won that one too).

Jumpin’ Jehosefat! That’s all we need is MORE content, MORE monitors, MORE bad TV shows. I think there is something good in less choice offered in a flight, and if you don’t like what they’re showing you can listen to your favorite podcasts, or, forbid the thought, read a book. Call me a Luddite!

I flew with Delta to Israel two weeks ago (13 hours). On the return flight, the entire planes in-seat console system was down most of the way. That’s the second time that has occured to me. Doesn’t sound like the most reliable system yet.

Three times I’ve had an opportunity to use the monitors Delta has added to its flights. I absolutely love them! On two occasions, I was on 12+ hour trip and it was exciting being able to track the exact location of the plane. Having a window seat allowed me to occasionally match what I saw on the Google Earth-esque screen to what I could actually see below me. Sights of the Bering Strait brought back memories of childhood Social Studies lessons of the the first settlers of America. My second favorite option was the one that allowed me to create my own playlist. With an ecclectic compilation that ranged from Fergie to Ella Fitzgerald, I was able to customize a playlist to which I could simply lie back and relax. Lastly, the competitor in me truly enjoyed the In-Flight Trivia. I must brag that I was number two of the all time top ten. I just couldn’t beat that guy in 54F. Some of the “In case you were interested” facts that were revealed along with the answer left a lot to be desired, though. Overall, this new addition to Delta’s flights makes each trip all the more exciting.
