Just to the east of Yosemite National park and north of Mono Lake is a town that time forgot. Bodie was a booming gold mining town before the mines played out. When the miners left they often just abandoned their houses and today Bodie is a California state park that preserves what is left of the town in a state of “arrested decay”. You can peak into the school house and see the lessons ready to be taught under a thick layer of dust. Around the town there are a number of abandoned cars in various states of disrepair and this one truck that looks like it is ready to be refueled and ready to go.

Very interesting. There’s a similar ghost town on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We went there when I was a child and I still remember it.

My cousin lives out in CA and I remember getting postcards from the Bodie area from her. She loves the ghost towns and parks out there, and I think I’d love visiting them if I ever get out that way!
Sort of reminds me of some of the old towns and vehicles we saw sitting around in similar states of “arrested decay” in some old mining areas we visited in Alaska. Those sorts of things sometimes have a beauty all of their own.

I love ghost towns. Last Summer when I was in Aspen, CO I went to some of the old silver mining ghost towns. Because of the severe weather there is much less remaining. Bodie used to have much more but two huge fires consumed most of the town before it became a state park.

I love the colors in this photo.
I have been wanted to visit the area east of Yosemite for years. There are so many little gems like this there, huh?

I remember visiting this ghost town as a kid. I hadn’t thought about it in years, but it’s amazing how the images came flooding back to me after seeing your picture and reading the story.
Thanks so much for sharing this picture as part of Photo Friday.

I was born in Reno, where my growing up years included exploring ghost towns, including Bodie. My grandfather moved to Nevada from the east to be the medical doctor for the mining towns of Wonder and Fairview — both of which are now ghost towns. Thanks for sharing a portion of this history of the west.
