Maasai Boma in Tanzania – Photo Friday

This is a picture of a cultural boma in Tanzania taken by one of my traveling companions, Mary Fields. This is a traditional Maasai village which is preserved this way in large part for tourists to visit. The center of the boma is a pen for the all important Maasai cattle. Huts made of mud and cattle dung surround that with the outer stockade wall surrounding the whole thing. What you see in this picture is the outer wall. These are the women of the boma who have come out to greet us. I loved the contrast between the stark background of the area where the boma was located (just outside Ngorogoro crater) with the bright clothes of the women of the village.

I have this picture also available as a travel poster.

Those Masai women are so photogenic, but I guess that’s the point when you go to one of those cultural bomas.
