Oia Church – Santorini, Greece – Photo Friday
by Chris Christensen Add commentscategories: europe travel
If you have seen pictures of Santorini (the Greeks who live there call it Fira) at the travel agency you could be excused if you thought it was too beautiful to be real. In real life, in my experience, it looks just as beautiful. One of the jewels of Santorini (granted a tourist encrusted jewel) is the town of Oia. Oia is at the west end of the crescent shaped island and fills with tourists at sunset to watch that natural spectacle. Oia like most of the other towns on the island clings to the cliffs above the caldera of the volcano that forms the island. An small houses, shops and churches like this one fill its ranks of buildings. If you can’t take a beautiful picture on Santorini… give up and sell your camera on eBay.

I love all the different shapes in this one building even more than the bright blue roof! Thanks for sharing.

May I be struck down by lightning if I ever get sick of photos of the Greek Isles. It’s so surreal, isn’t it?

LOL Jamie, I would guess there is no real danger of that lightning strike.

Ahh, Santorini! We went for a week or two and stayed a few months!
We had a hotel room right on the volcano caldera in Io and I could not get over how profoundly peaceful the view was along with beautiful. No other place like it on earth!
Hubs is making a soultravelers3 Youtube video of it as we speak. I would hate to be there in August with the cruise ships & endless crowds, but it is simply divine and empty in June!

I love the Blue & white in Greece. I bought my camera off e-bay – and seem to have had more luck with my photos than the seller.

Chris – this is a beautiful shot. I was in Santorini myself a number of years ago and, can you believe it? I never made it to Io. Still loved the island and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Ah, yes, Santorini is still on my wish list to go – and Zakynthos too. Well, actually most of the Greek islands…. I love the white and blue, but also any worn down buildings – and the people!
I’ve only been to Crete and that was a real pleasure. So much to explore and so incredible crystal clear water!!

We also loved Crete. For one thing it had the best beaches we have seen in Europe.

My top ten list of places to go just keeps growing…I think it is a top 100 list now!!! What a fantastic photo…it truly looks like something you would see on a postcard or a coffee table book!

The colors and buildings look so perfect, that it looks like a toy playset or one of those architectural scale models!
