This video is the introduction of Rick Steves‘ talk at the Bay Area Travel Show. He was giving a talk about visiting Europe “through the backdoor” (connecting to the culture and not traveling to all the same tourist destinations in tour buses). Before his talk he spoke for a few minutes about his personal story of how he went from a piano teacher to a popular travel personality on TV and radio, a travel guidebook author and a tour operator.

I am the host of the Amateur Traveler. The Amateur Traveler is an online travel show that focuses primarily on travel destinations and what are the best places to travel to. It includes both a weekly audio podcast, a video podcast, and a blog. I am also the Director of Engineering for TripAdvisor.com/Flights.

Thanks for posting this! Great to hear Rick’s story.

On a side note, I found out that it’s very important not to reverse the “u” and “e” in your URL. Yikes! Some day I will learn to spell “amateur” correctly!
