See No Evil – San Francisco Public Art – Photo Friday
by Chris Christensen Add commentscategories: photography, usa

San Francisco has some great public art and one of my favorites are these statues on a bench just south of the main gate of Chinatown on Grant street. It is the classic see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. The way the statue was made it allows a space for people to sit in the middle of the three monkeys and so people do. What’s the best public art in your town?

I love those. I could see my kids sit there on the bench and look a part.
I don’t know if it’s the best in town we have similar statues in the outdoor shopping area. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon with kids and let them run around checking out different statues. We have a big turtle that they can ride on, a little girl reading on top of a pile of books and a mom with her kids like this one (http://the-q-family.blogspot.com/2008/10/wordless-wednesday-are-you-my-mommy.html)

We have lots of art in Seattle – it’s mandatory on public buildings. But I don’t think we have something quite as fun as this.

There are some fun statues in Bristol too – I like these ones in Millenium square of famous Bristolians.

We don’t have much public art where I live, although Philadelphia is known for it’s many cool murals. The kids are always fascinated by them. I think this statue would tickle my fancy too!

I love public art, especially watching people interact with it. It’s not from my home town but I think my favourite would be “the bean” in Chicago. It is this super-reflective bean shaped sculpture. I could sit there for hours just watching people.

Chinatown and Grant, you say? I’m heading over there, I’ve got to check this out.

We were out on Grand Valley’s campus in western Michigan and noticed a lot of public art there…plus Tim found, and downloaded, an “Art Walk” that takes walkers to the public art on the campus at Detroit’s Wayne State University. Campuses seem to be a great place to find public art.

Colleges are a good suggestion. I went to RPI and we had a great kinetic sculpture called the Crinatoid from an artist called George Rickey that would move in the wind. It was mesmerizing… especially after a hard final.
