Strange Food Encounters #2 – Beignets in New Orleans – Daily Photo

Beignets themselves are not that strange a food. We certainly ate stranger things when we were in New Orleans like alligator paté and pizza fish. But the trip to the famous Cafe du Monde produced some of the better pictures. Beignets are basically a deep fried dough covered with powdered sugar. What caught my eye as a photographer was what we looked liked as we ate them. We all ended up bent over so that less of the sugar would be coating us when we were done.

Beignets will never make it onto anyone’s list as health food as one glance at the rather large man deep fat frying them will attest. Of course, it probably did not help that our daughter finished off the bag of powdered sugar that remained.

Love it! I used to live within walking distance of Cafe Du Monde, and loved the smell of the place… it was crowded all the time. You’re right that no one would consider it health food, so my discipline was required. But now when I go to NOLA as a visitor, I have beignets and cafe au lait every time! Thanks for sharing.
