The canons outside the Maritime Museum hint at its original purpose as a fortress defending the the old Royal Navy Dockyard. The main structure on the left is the Commissioner’s House which during the Second World Wa served as Allied headquarters for North Atlantic submarine radio interception.

This is a fantastic museum– even those who aren’t interested in Maritime history will find it interesting. When I was there a few years ago there was an artist who was working on an amazing mural illustrating Bermuda’s history. The painting covered every inch of wall and ceiling in a room, and we got to chat with him while watching him work.
