Introduction to Jet Air Travel Video – What Happened?

This old video was made by PanAm to introduce their new jet service. It looks like a great way to travel but I have to wonder why PanAm did not get sued for false advertising. Or were things really that different then? They advertise jet air travel this way:

  • spacious cabin
  • attractively decorated
  • air conditioned but draft free
  • roominess extends even to the powder rooms which look like those in a private home
  • and a new sensation, complete absence of vibration
  • there is no feeling of movement at all
  • no vibration, hardly any sound
  • the travail has been taken out of travel
  • delicious food adds to the enjoyment
  • scenes of living room quiet and relaxation
  • the mood enhanced by lighting that can be changed from the pale pink of dawn through all the various to the dark blue of night

I am not sure if it is more anachronistic to see a passenger light up a cigarette, a family eating lobster tail or the stewardess have time to sit down and work on a puzzle with a child. Clear the video was shot before the invention of either turbulence or noise canceling headphones.

What would they have to say if they remade the video for today?

P.S. They may not have gotten all the wrinkles out of this new fangle jet travel. The pilot tells them they are landing at London airport… but that’s not London. No problem, still time for another cigarette and another puzzle.
