Calzone as Big as Your Head

calzone

I generally have a rule while eating out in restaurants to not try to eat anything bigger than my head. My weakness though when traveling in Italy or in south eastern France is calzone. If you are not familiar with how to make a calzone the simple description would be to take a pizza and fold it in two.

At first I did not realize that one typical calzone can really feed two people. The picture above shows half a calzone from after we had figured that out. A calzone is a bit like a demure pizza. Unlike a pizza a calzone can have surprises as this one above in Antibes, France did. It included an egg that was somewhat softer than soft boiled. I would have to say that an egg in my calzone is less preferable to ham, cheese or any other number of ingredients.

The size of calazones can be a little overwhelming.

I remember having pizza in Florence one time with a very soft egg right in the middle. Didn’t do much for me.
