Hotels – San Francisco
San Francisco is a popular travel destination, a business travel destination as well as a convention city so it offers a range of accommodations from hostels to business class hotels.
Union square
Many of the business class hotels cluster around the Moscone convention center or Union square (from Market Street to Nob Hill), which is also the heart of San Francisco’s theatre and shopping areas. Conventioneers will find these hotels an easy walk from Moscone so this is usually the best region to stay if it is a convention that brings you to town. If shopping or theatre brings you to town this also might be the best location.
Airport Hotels
Staying near the airport is also an option for business travelers who need to grab an early flight out of town but I don’t recommend staying near the airport or in South San Francisco for tourists who are staying multiple days or for people attending one of the numerous conventions in town. You can get into the city from the airport using BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) but there are not great connections to BART from the airport hotels. Also the southern part of San Francisco is more industrial and less picturesque.
Fisherman’s Wharf Hotels
The other more popular cluster of hotels / motels for tourists is just south of Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square Pier 39. These hotels would have better access to the views along the bay, Hide Pier (part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area), street performers and all the tacky t-shirt shops and tourist museums of Fisherman’s Wharf.
Public transportation, including San Francisco’s famous cable cars, can be used to get back and forth between the Union Square area and the Fisherman’s wharf area but be aware that the lines for the cable car will get long during the high season. The lines for the Powell street cable car line are typically longer than those for the Mason street line.
