San Francisco Restaurants

The second most common reason to visit San Francisco that tourists give is restaurants. It is a city known for great chinese food, italian food, vegetarian food and sea food among other offerings. While it is known for its sour dough bread and its walk away shrimp cocktails there are many different dining options from inexpensive to the “if you have to ask you can’t afford it”.

Restaurants cluster in areas all over the city including:

  • Clement Street in the residential Richmond district
  • Irving Street in the Sunset District
  • Fillmore Street in the Fillmore
  • Union Street
  • Polk Street
  • Union Square
  • Fisherman’s Wharf

Columbus Ave

One great area for restaurants in the city, especially Italian restaurants and sidewalk cafes (yes there are days in San Francisco where you want to sit outside) is Columbus Ave between Pacific Ave and Washington Square Park. Because many of these restaurants spill out onto the street it is a great place to stumble upon a good restaurant. Three restaurants in this area that I have enjoyed are The Stinking Rose, Figaro’s Restaurant‎ and Caffe Sport‎.

Here is a list of some of the restaurants in San Francisco that we have mentioned on the Amateur Traveler blog:
