Travel to Southern Morocco – Episode 468

categories: africa travel

This episode of the Amateur Traveler talks about the recent Amateur Traveler trip to southern Morocco. 9 of the 10 people who joined me on this trip also join me for the podcast to share the good and bad of the trip.

From the crowds of Marrakesh to a gite (family-run accommodation) in the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains. From the walled city of Ait-Ben-Haddu to the dunes of the Sahara desert, this tour showed many different facets of Morocco.

We visited 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites, rode 9 camels, got caught in 1 thunderstorm (on camels), stormed across the desert in 3 4x4s, bought 0 carpets (but lots of other things), saw one herd of “flying goats”, had one great official guide and a number of volunteer ones, visited at least 4 walled cities and numerous markets, drank one batch of bad tea, visited one family of nomads, and generally had a great time.

We learn about courtship and death. We laughed at haggling techniques and questionable sugar cane vendors. We got to places where they couldn’t even imagine our lives, nor I suspect we theirs. We hiked, we biked, we rode, we squatted, we climbed and we shopped.

We missed you on this trip but hope you can join us on the next.
