Basic Rules

We had some friends, the Nybergs, who had two rules in their house:

  • Be Nice
  • Have Fun

My family had one rule:

  • Be Nice
  • If you want to have fun go to the Nybergs

The rules here are also simple. Keep in mind these basic facts:

  • The people who read this are real people
  • Real people deserve to be treated with respect
  • This site is not owned by you, you are a guest
  • The bandwidth bills for this site come to Chris Christensen who has the final say about its contents
  • If it is not true, don't post it
  • discussions about wiki content should not be held on the wiki but on the [Amateur Traveler Discussion Board]
  • Don't add pictures or text that you don't have a legal right to add, it just makes the lawyers mad

Links to External Sites

Most travel wikis like Wikipedia and Wiki Travel do not allow extern sites to add links to them. I want the Amateur Traveler Wiki to allow other blogs, podcasters, and event commercial companies to add useful content. But, I will only allow it if the following behavior is followed:

  • You cannot delete links that a competitor has added just because you compete with them
  • Links to non-appropriate content (porn, spam, etc) or just content that is not relevant will be deleted and will cause you to be banned
  • Links to boring sites with little content and a lot of google ad spots will be deleted
  • Only link to external sites in English
  • If you post a link to your tour company, blog, podcast, etc, also create one paragraph worth of travel information on the same page. e.g. If I want to post a link to my Paris hotel I should also add some other information about Paris like my favorite museum
  • Fair is fair, if you add a link to the travel wiki to your site, please add a link on your site back to the Amateur Traveler. That can be a link to the topic page in the wiki or to an episode of the Amateur Traveler on a particular topic. Thanks.
  • If you are linking to a external website, please use the name of the website as the link name. So if you are linking to a site called "Go West! Adventure Travel" then use that for the link name not "Adventure Travel in North America", although "Go West! Adventure Travel (Adventure Travel in North America)" is acceptable.
  • Try and keep lists of links in alphabetical order by site name.
  • Discussions about wiki content should not be held on the wiki but on the [Amateur Traveler Discussion Board]
