Great podcast, i really enjoyed it and im sure it will help me when i visit Costa Rica later in the year. According to the Costa Rica HQ blog it is quite cheap over there anyway so i’m sure to save some money!

I just had the chance to listen to this…I’m amazed at the prices Pauline was mentioning. In what reality is this “budget”? Admittedly, I’m not travelling in the States at present, but I just spent 7 days at a 5* seaside resort — all inclusive — for twice the cost of one night in the New York mansion she mentioned. Admittedly, it was extremely conservative in a Muslim kind of way: no alcohol, separate swimming areas for men and women, shoulders must be covered…
I guess you get what you pay for, but “budget”?!

Actually Craig, Pauline’s prices for NYC ARE budget travel. I just went to NYC on a weekend during the offseason (Feb) and paid $150/night for a hotel just off of Times Square. That price was a coup. Any Manhattan hotel in the summer will like be twice that amount (or more). I challenge anybody to find “normal” accommodations for cheaper prices in NYC.

Pauline referenced a book during the podcast (cathedrals in Europe) and I wanted to check it out. Can anyone reference me the name? I was thinking McCallie, but any google search on McCallie and cathedrals just turns into a Catholic search nightmare…lol.

Hi All,
This was a fun one to do. As for NYC, unfortunately, it’s the second most expensive destination in the WORLD after Moscow. The average price for a hotel room is now $325 per night. So I’m proud of having found hotels/accommodations that cost a third of that average and are still quite nice. For other destinations, yes, I agree $120 is high. Unfortunately, it’s bottom of the barrel for NYC.
As for the book: It’s Cathedral by David Macaulay. Lovely book, hope you enjoy it.
