Barge and Castle - Rhine River Gorge, Germany

One reason I like this picture is that it captures two different aspects of the Rhine River Gorge in Germany. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the many castles in the area that show the historic value of the trade through the region. But, as the barge in the foreground shows, the Rhine is still an important commercial waterway in the 21st century.

I understand what you mean, the contrast makes this view even more beautiful.

Chris,
We are currently at Koblenz wishing to do a barge tour from northern Germany to Mainz. How do we get onto the Rhine river barge?
Thank you

Which castle is that? It doesn’t quite look like Burg Katz, but almost. I’ve been on that the stretch between Koblenz and Bingen a number of times and always enjoy it.

That appears to be Burg Stahleck, a castle above Bacharach on the Rhine River which is now a hostel http://www.jugendherberge.de/en/hostels/search/portrait/jh.jsp?IDJH=390
