Chris off road racing is really big in parts of CA. In fact, the 7 time NASCAR Champion, Jimmie Johnson got his start racing truck off road in CA.

Chris, check out King of the Hammers in Johnson Creek. Not my thing, but off road is big in the desert.
BTW overlanding as a verb is growing in popularity. In the past it was called a road trip (as you did) but know it is called overlanding and is becoming a hot topic. I was recently at Overland Expo in Flagstaff with thousands of attendees.
