Heidelberg Castle - Heidelberg, Germany

Heidelberg Castle was turned from a mighty fortress into a ruin because of the hubris of Frederick V, the “Winter King”, who became king of Bohemia over the advice of many (including his mother) while still a young man. His election to the king of Bohemia led to the Thirty Years War. It is said by some that Fredrick acted out of love for his young wife who was the daughter of James I of England. Though he lost his domains in Heidelberg, his decedents did end up ruling England as what we now know as the house of Windsor.
