After clicking through to the original Sunday Independent article, it seems that Ryan Air is putting a lot of pressure on pilots to fly with less reserve fuel than they really want. These aircraft were not declaring ‘minimum fuel’, which gives landing priority to the aircraft needing it. They issued actual ‘Mayday’ broadcasts, equivalent to the maritime SOS, saying we’re out of gas and need to land right now. I would think that the EU or UK equivalent to the FAA is going to be all over Ryan Air.
