The Amateur Traveler talks to Raul from Atlanta about his recent trip to Krakow Poland. Learn about this former capital of Poland which is a treasure trove of history. Raul will take us to the cloth hall in the old town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle. We will also talk about his trips to the unusual Wieliczka salt mine with its rock salt carvings. A very poignant side trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau makes us confront the unspeakable evil done in those two places. Raul also traveled to Wadowice, the boyhood home of the man who would later be Pope John Paul II, and Black Madonna, the home of the Black Madonna. In between we talk about Polish food (lard for your bread sir?), museums, transportation and history.

Great interview about Krakow! On a visit to Poland several years ago, I stopped in Krakow on my way to Krynica…I didn’t stay long, but have always wanted to get back for a more extended visit. Again, great show. Chris

I really enjoyed this one. Hope Raul is back with more of his travels some time, a great interview. As an Australian, I’d love to get to do a trip one day starting on ANZAC day in Turkey and travelling across Europe visiting significant war sites like Belguim and Poland. After listening to this informative and interesting podcast I’m more determined that I’ll do it one day. Thanks Raul

Thanks for all this good stuff.
Am very much looking forward to my visit to Krakow – or Poland in general, I should say. (And I’m up for the lard on bread – had it in Czech republic – not an everyday treat…)

I was in Krakow (and then Auschwitz/Birkeneu last May. Enjoyed the experience. My day in Krakow was quite memorable as the was the last day of school for the local university and everyone was in costume with entertainment in the main square.
Still not sure what to think of the watermelon slices topping that went with my ice cream sundae. I’ll never forget that.
