On the cold easterly shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Britain lies this autumn in a wonderful golden haze as it begins to celebrate one of the most exciting events of the year, Bonfire night.
But what is bonfire night?
Bonfire night, celebrated mainly in England, is a celebration of the failed attempt to blow up Parliament, and King James I way back in 1605. By stowing away 36 barrels of dynamite in the cellars of the House of Lords the conspirators were to kill the king, and the entirety of the House of Lords along with him.
By doing so the plotters hoped for a better future of all the Catholics that lived in England. Unfortunately for them however, Guy Fawkes on the night before the event, was caught in the cellars with the barrels, leading to the capture of his men and their subsequent deaths.
Throughout Britain there are many bonfires of gargantuan splendour and of course, a few which don’t even deserve to call themselves ‘fires’. With that in mind, we’ve picked out five of the best bonfires taking place throughout England this November.
Roundhay Park, Leeds
Located in the North East corner of Leeds, the Roundhay Park celebration promises to be one of the finest celebrations of Bonfire Night in the North of England. Taking place on the 5th of November with free admission, the park is expecting tens of thousands of people to enjoy the fire, explosions and scrummy toffee apples.
Being so close to Leeds Centre, revellers are also invited as accommodation such as Residence Six short term apartments, Travelodges and the Hilton are all taking bookings for the night.
Gun Powder Plod, York
Officially the first bonfire celebration in York for years, the Gun Powder Plod promises to be one of (if not the biggest) events in the 2012 York Calender.
Featuring the likes of Reverend and the Makers, Montego Bay and The Littemores on the main stage, a 5k race, horrible histories and numerous food (and beer tents) are also out for a night of fantastic celebration.
Tickets are available online from the Gunpowder Plod website and the event takes place on November 5.
After Dark, Sheffield
Sold as the biggest firework bonanza in Yorkshire, with an average audience of 18,000, the After Dark show plays host to some of the best music around; past acts have included Girls Aloud and Wet Wet Wet.
For just £8 for adults and £4 for children, you can be assured you’re your money will be well spent with fare ground rides, food and stalls; not to mention one of the biggest firework displays in Yorkshire and a fire that can be seen for miles around.

An event that runs over a six night period (including 5 November), the theme park offers much more than just a bonfire. With your entry to the bonfire included to the price of your Legoland ticket, there are a total of 55 rides and attractions to get you warmed up for the festivities.
Lord Mayor’s Fireworks, London
One of the biggest firework displays in the entirety of the United Kingdom, it is also free of charge to attend. Held on the banks of the River Thames in the centre of London, the show includes over half a tonne of explosives, some reaching heights of 600ft.
A display that rivals that of the New Year celebrations, be sure to find yourself a place on Victoria Embankment to assure yourself of the best view.
