Hear about travel to Kansas City (Kansas and Missouri) as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rob Walch about the Paris of the Plains. Kansas City has that nickname because of the many fountains in the city.

Rob recommends Kansas particularly to sports fans with its wonderful museum dedicated to the Negro Leagues. This is the former home for the famous Kansas City Monarchs. “Go to the Negro League museum in the morning and then head off to a Royals game in the afternoon. It’s such a unique perspective, especially if you have kids because you are going to get a lot of questions. ‘What do you mean they played in different leagues'”.

“Now if you are a basketball aficionado and you are in Kansas City in the wintertime you have to go to a K.U. basketball game. Tickets are a little bit pricy but the experience of cramming all those people into the small little Allen Field House and how vibrant they are. If you love college basketball Allen Field House is one of the Meccas you have to go to. It’s just 30-45 minutes outside of Kansas City” The basketball program at K.U. was started by the inventor of the game.

Rob also recommends the American Royal Rodeo which is kicked off with the American Royal BBQ. That usually runs from early September through early November. The BBQ is an all-star BBQ in a city known for its BBQ. Rob recommends 3 of his favorite BBQ joints as we talk about the joys of Kansas City “burnt ends”.

For families with kids, Rob recommends Science City, Maker Fair, Power Wheels racing, Wonderscope Children’s Museum, Crown Center Lego Land, the Baldwin City Train Depot, Paul Messner Puppets and a restaurant where they deliver the food by train.

For adults, Kansas City now boasts a number of casinos and on the First Friday of every month in the Cross Roads District the art galleries open longer and you can combine a dinner out with strolling among the art.

Rob also recommends some more unusual sites like the Airline History Museum, a balloon festival, and Stricker’s Auctions which has been doing auctions for 40 years.

Found your site and podcast by way of listening to This Week in Travel and I’ve really enjoyed both of the podcasts you are doing. I have begun to listen to your podcast from the beginning or at least when you first began posting on iTunes and I wanted to let you know I really appreciated your #54 podcast because I’m also a Hoosier from Indiana, and reside in Indianapolis.

I travel for business about twice a month by air and twice a week drive to the Chicagoland area. I have totally caught the travel bug and I just really love learning, listening, reading, and engaging in traveling. I’m one of those that enjoys the journey as much as the destination. I also am able to incorporate my hobbies into my travel, as I like running and I try and run in new parks and places as much as I can. I also listen to a lot of audiobooks and many various twit.tv podcasts on technology and so it’s great to be able to just take it all with me.

Also, I like that you go on your church group trips, as its a very subtle but nice way to show your faith in this way.
