Botswana Safari – Episode 639
categories: africa travelHear about travel to Botswana on safari as I, the Amateur Traveler, relates stories from his recent experience on a mobile safari in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and a Safari Camp experience in the Kalahari desert on a press trip with Botswana Trek.
I spent 6 nights in the Okavango Delta at two different campsites on a mobile safari with Royale Wilderness. We spent 3 nights in the Khwai Concession (with visits to Chobe National Park) and 3 nights in the Moremi Game Reserve. The Okavango is an unusual inland delta where the rivers from the Angolan highlands drain into the desert sands of Botswana. It is teeming with life including elephants, wildebeests, zebras, impalas, lions, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, hyenas, civets, African wild dogs, and 450 bird species.
This special episode is recorded mostly on location. It includes some accounts of encounters with elephants, amazing experiences with African wild dogs on the hunt, and some unexpected encounters with lions… including one that demanded with its presence near the camp to be included in the podcast.
I also spent 2 nights in Jack’s Camp which is a luxury safari camp in the Kalahari desert. We took a walk with Kalahari bushmen, took game drives to see the local wildlife, saw a salt flat the size of Switzerland, and ended up with a meerkat on my head.

Hi Chris,
I recently discovered your podcast and enjoy it very much. Thank you for bringing destinations, domestic and foreign, to listeners. I just listened to your Botswana safari episode and went to your website to see your photos. However I cannot find them. Am I missing an obvious link? If they are indeed there, may I suggest you make it more obvious, like a link entitled “photos?” Thank you.

Hi Chris,
Lucky you to have been invited on a trip to Botswana. I visited this part of Africa 15 years ago but, unlike yourself, I wasn’t fortunate enough to see or hear as many carnivores as you did. I only saw one lion resting in the shade of a tree in the distance. I was extremely impressed with the spotting skills of our guide. Not only was the lion quite far away and very well camouflaged, the guide was driving when he spotted it. It took me several minutes to spot the lion with binoculars! The guides there certainly have a sharp eye.
I was very interested in what Johnny had to say in your podcast and very much enjoyed hearing the sounds of the wildlife, the clicking sound of the Kalahari Bushman language and the music and songs of Botswana.
I started listening to your podcast about six months ago and have been listening to the episodes in chronological order. Episode 639 was the most recent one I listened to.
Thank you for many hours of listening pleasure and for expanding my bucket list.
Best Regards,
Agnes

Agnes, yeah the carnivores are more stealthy. This was my second safari and my first leopard.
