Hear about hiking the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites in northern Italy as the Amateur Traveler talks to Morgan Fielder from CraveThePlanet.com about a multi-day hike she has taken more than once.
Morgan says, “My connection with the region is that it’s become an annual family pilgrimage. So every summer, with the kids and family friends from all over the world we meet there, and we do a five-day hut-to-hut hiking trip through the Dolomites on the Alta Via 1 trail.”
Margan says the person who should do this is “somebody that wants to ignite wonder and just be in a place where the landscape is so spectacular. You forget cars even exist. But then, at the end of the night, you get a three-course dinner served with local wines from an OMA cooking in a family-run mountain lodge.”
The entire Alta Via 1 is 75 miles (120 km), but Morgan has been doing a shorter 5-day trip so that “my kids won’t hate me”. They spend a day in Cortina d’Ampezzo and then take a bus up to Lago di Braies and then hike south to Cortina d’Ampezzo again.
Along the way, they stop in a series of mountain “huts” or refuggios. These mountain lodges provide a good to great meal and a comfortable place to sleep, which allows them to hike without tents and only with one change of clothes.
Morgan describes the various refuggios, the hiking segments, and the landscape of this beautiful part of Italy. She tells us where we will encounter day hikers, when to go, and what the weather will be like. Along the way, we learn a bit about WWI when this rugged terrain was the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary.

What an excellent listen! We know the Dolomites in winter and we also stay in the Rifugi. It’s great to hear that the same challenges exist in the summer as in the winter! We call it a Dolomites Ski Safari!
Happy hiking!
