The Amateur Traveler talks about traveling to the Hawaiian Island of Lana’i.
I recently spent a week in Lana’i as a guest of the Lana’i Visitor’s Bureau as one of their 2012 “Artists in Residence”.
Lana’i only has 3,000 residence and a small-town feel. I talk about some of the more unusual (for me at least) activities that I tried on the Island, including riding a horse, going on a ride and shoot (to Lana’i Pines Sporting Clays), sunbathing, learning to play the ukulele, getting a Lomi Lomi massage, volunteering at a cat sanctuary and going 4 wheel drive tour. You don’t have to do this much when you go to Lana’i. You could also just golf or lie on the beach.

Chris – that was so perfect! I learned so much – including those little details that make the experience so much smoother. It once again says to me that the value of one podcast (about 30 minutes in length) is far greater than a blog post! You covered so much territory (literally and figuratively) and your candid comments will surely help anyone planning a trip to L?na?i. Thank you so much for your professional and personal insights.
Like you, I think there is tremendous value in a “do nothing” vacation on L?na?i. Especially in this rush rush world we live in, I can easily see this island as the perfect getaway. Plenty to do for those who love the outdoors, soft adventure, golf, hunting, diving, and dining, yet so peacefully quiet (and spa-licios) for those who are looking for a respite.
Favorite quote: “Overheard: yeah, we had a thief but he left.” Just precious. Oh and I will be telling my sister Nancy about making a vacation to help at the cat rescue center. That is so purrfectly up her alley!

Thanks for sharing this blog about Lanai. I used to go fishing and diving here during my college days and remember what a great place it is to visit. Back then, both Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines used to fly there with their all jet fleet. Now only the smaller carriers of Hawaii interisland fights provide service there, like Island Air, Mokulele and Pacific Wings, on small turbo prop planes. In some ways, technology has gone backwards, at least with respect air transportation alternatives to and from Lanai.
