Visit Liverpool with the Amateur Traveler. This video shows part of the Liverpool’s wonderful Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. One of the things that my family did when we visited Liverpool was take a Beatles tour. When John Lennon died Beatles fans started to come to Liverpool as a kind of pilgrimage. The city of Liverpool organized a tour that is a treat for fans but you can also enjoy this tour even if you are not a rabid fan. It is informative and entertaining.
There are many Beatles activities and tourism spots in Liverpool including The Beatles Story (A Day in Liverpool: The Beatles Story & The Albert Docks). This tour was great for my two Beatles fans and also for someone like me who doesn’t have a Beatles playlist.
So we enjoyed Albert Dock and the architecture but we came for rock and roll. I say we, but it is really wife and daughter who are the big Beatles fans.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this tour since I am not as big a fan of the Beatles (yes I like them). The tour is organized by the local visitor’s bureau and is filled with not just traveling to the homes of the Beatles and sites that ended up in Beatles songs but tons of Beatles songs, trivia, and history.
So, standing in front of George Harrison’s house would not have been a pilgrimage for me but I loved the story of Paul McCartney trying to talk the 17-year-old John Lennon into letting the 14-year-old George join the band. Legend has it that George auditioned for John on the top deck of a bus.
If you are in London, you can easily get to Liverpool. Viator has a Beatles and Liverpool Rail Day Trip from London which is one option.
