Travel to Brazil – Episode 569

Hear about travel to Brazil as the Amateur Traveler talks to Ricky Shetty about his family’s recent trip to this beautiful and complicated country.

Ricky and his family are on a one year trip around the world. They spent 6 weeks in Brazil. He tells us his 6-week itinerary but then we focus on a smaller 7-10 day itinerary to Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls, and Manaus on the Amazon.

He starts us off in Rio which is “one of the world’s most amazing, most beautiful cities”. He recommends time on one of the famous beaches (Copacabana and Ipanema), a visit to the Christ the Redeemer statue, and a favela tour. We talk about The Girl from Ipanema but also about crime.

From there he recommends a visit to the spectacular Iguazu Falls on the Brazil / Argentina border.

Most of Ricky’s family’s trip to Brazil was along the coast of Brazil but he highly recommends a visit to Manaus just above where the Negro merges with the Solimões, to form the Amazon river. Ricky and his family tour a boat ride and visited a native village.

It’s the biggest country in South America with both some of the largest cities and some of the most remote wilderness. Top that off with great food and people and you will learn why Brazil should be on your to-do list.

Hey Chris,

Just found you, first with this Week in Travel and now I’ve picked up your podcasts. I listened to my first few driving across the Southern California desert today. I really enjoy your format and look forward to using your podcats for future travel.

I was raised in Saratoga before taking off for a 37-year career in parks. I retired last year as Chief Ranger at Joshua Tree National Park. So I’m always interested in National Parks and World Heritage Sites. I’m a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas.

I’ve traveled the world since I was very young. Unfortunately, my wife picked up a strange illness in Africa, and now my travels are limited, caring for her.

On your recent Seychelles podcast, the Aldabra tortoises were mentioned. You might be interested in knowing Prison Island off Zanzibar has the rare Aldabra tortoise also. In 1919, four were given as a gift to Zanzibar. Now there are over 125 on the island with the oldest being 189 years old. I also had Thanksgiving on Zanzibar, it was wonderful.

I also listened to your Oman podcast (as you know Zanzibar and Oman are culturally connected). What a wonderful place and thanks for taking me back. I usually do a travel summary when I get home. As my trip to Oman was on US Government business, you might find my summary interesting.
