Hear about travel to Lombok in Indonesia as the Amateur Traveler talks to Jason Andrew Jenkins from AnEpicEducation.com about his family’s recent 5 week trip to this island paradise.
Jason says of Lombok, “Most people have heard of Bali. Lombok is the island directly east of Bali in the Indonesian archipelago. Especially for those who have been to Bali and feel like it is becoming overdeveloped, Lombok is a simpler place. It’s less developed even though it’s started to gain tourism dollars. A little sleepier but it still has a lot of the same charm and natural wonders.”
“Bali is a Hindu island, smack in the middle of what is a predominantly Muslim country. Lombok is a Muslim island. Before Indonesia was a country, all of these islands had their own distinct cultures, their own distinct ethnic tribes as well. That element of Lombok we found interesting. It has a touch of the tropical paradise that Bali is but it comes from a completely different cultural background.”
Jason carves out a one week or slightly longer itinerary from their 5 week time on the island, starting in the beach area of Senggigi, then visiting the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air), the volcano Mount Rinjani and then the small islands of the northeast.
The stop in Sengigi is for some beach time. If you did not want to spend some time on the beach or in the water, this might not be the best choice of a vacation. Jason and his family took surf lessons and his kids worked on their PADI certification while on Lombok.
In the Gilis they found a combination of tourist infrastructure and laid back islands without cars. They snorkeled with sea turtles and biked around the entire islands.
Mount Rinjani provides a challenging hike to a caldera with a crater lake. They chose not to do the climb with kids in tow on this trip but it is a very popular activity on the island. They instead hiked to waterfalls and stayed in a resort with infinity pools.
They leave us with an excursion to a “secret island” that disappears at high tide, mangrove swamps and camping on remote islands in the northeast of Lombok.
If you are looking for an up and coming tropical destination, then maybe you should consider Lombok.

@chris2x You say “U-N-Esco” whereas I say “U-Nesco”. Both right, or do we need to duel to the death to find out? ?
David is right and I was wrong.
