Chicago, Illinois – Episode 53

categories: USA Travel

The Amateur Traveler podcast welcomes Mark Peacock from the Travel Commons podcast to talk about Chicago, his home town.

Hear about where to get a good hot dog or a “beef”, a walking tour, Millennium Park, Lincoln Park zoo, blues, Wrigley field, deep-dish pizza, etc.

Outside the office of the Chicago Tribune is this large statue of the couple from American Gothic who is all packed up and apparently vacationing in Chicago. I am not sure why they brought their pitchfork along on vacation. Frankly, from their expressions, they don’t seem to be enjoying their vacation all that much. For scale, below is a picture of my next to the statue. I am 6? 3? tall and I don’t even come up to the couple’s knees.

I’m so glad I heard this episode!! I’m originally from Chicago area and I miss the food so much. Now I’m planning a trip back to take my children to just about all the places mentioned. I would throw in all the great museums on my trip also. Thanks for the cholesterol-free trip to Chicago taken from my laptop. Keep up the great work. My entire family loves this podcast and can’t wait to take some of the same trips you mention here. Thanks again, Lisa Eisenhart

Lisa –

I wouldn’t suggest taking the kids to the Weiner Circle after nightfall. It’s not dangerous — just the insults move into R-rated territory. Head west into Hyde Park along 55th or 57th Street after a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry for some interesting food choices. The University of Chicago crowd keeps it a bit eclectic.

Regards,
Mark

One comment made on this podcast was that Chicago has no East Side. That is incorrect. The East Side is actually south of the lake and borders Indiana.
