Why We Chose a Disney Cruise

Disney cruises are well-known for offering exceptional, family-focused cruise experiences that effectively blend classic cruising elements with a distinctive Disney storytelling immersion. Since the debut of the first Disney-themed cruise ship, the Disney Magic, in July 1998, the cruise line has built a reputation for exemplary service, premier entertainment, pristine private islands, and high-end amenities. Although Disney cruise itineraries are mainly tailored for families, they are also marketed to couples without children, solo travelers, empty nesters, and seniors by showcasing a diverse array of nostalgic, adults-only Disney experiences.

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast who has cherished Disney parks, movies, and animation since childhood, I have always longed to embark on a Disney cruise. However, this dream remained elusive due to the prohibitive cost and the limited duration of most cruise itineraries. This year, my wife and I decided to create a unique family experience that would bring together our two daughters and their respective partners for a few days. We envisioned a shared adventure that eliminated the hassle of meal preparation and cleanup as an ideal choice for our diverse group. Given our collective love for Disney, our frequent visits to Disney parks, and the profound impact Disney has had on our lives, we believed that a Disney cruise would appeal to everyone involved.

Much to our delight, the concept of a cruise resonated with everyone, leading us to reserve three rooms on the Disney Fantasy. Our five-day journey featured a stop in Nassau, Bahamas, along with a day spent on both of Disney’s exclusive islands, Lookout Cay and Castaway Cay. Following our five days of family bonding, we are still pondering whether this was the experience we had anticipated. Some moments were outstanding, while at other times, it was merely satisfactory. Our evaluations and memories regarding the experience varied significantly. Each of us appears to have had a unique experience, accompanied by distinctly different perspectives.

Our Family’s Disney and Cruise Background

To provide some context, it is important to recognize that as a collective, we hold diverse perspectives regarding cruises in general, as well as varying degrees of enthusiasm for Disney. I was raised watching the Wonderful World of Disney every Sunday, eagerly anticipating each episode and celebrating whenever an episode highlighted Disneyland. My passion for Disney remained strong even during my teenage years. In March of 1972, just five months after the resort’s opening, my mother took my two brothers and me to Walt Disney World. Since that initial visit, I have frequented a Disney Park nearly every year. Although my enthusiasm did start to diminish as I grew older, it was reignited when my wife and I relocated near Orlando after retirement. It has become quite common for us to visit Disney Springs for lunch or dinner approximately every two months. We truly appreciate the ambiance and distinctiveness of a Disney Resort.

Our daughters grew up with Disney integrated into their lives as well. This encompassed trips to Disney Parks, watching Disney films and animations, shopping at the Disney Store, and enjoying the Disney Channel. They undoubtedly possess a deeper understanding of Disney over the last two decades than my wife and I do. Their partners are also Disney enthusiasts. While none of us consider ourselves Disney adults, we all take great pleasure in a wonderful day at a Disney Resort.

My wife and I enjoy taking two to three cruises annually, having experienced a total of 33 cruises across five different cruise lines. Almost everyone in our family shares a passion for cruising, except for my eldest daughter. The only other cruise she embarked on was a wonderful trip to Cuba with me, which, regrettably, is now prohibited. Our Disney cruise marked her boyfriend’s first cruise.

Planning an Adults-Focused Disney Cruise

We organized our Disney cruise journey and itinerary with the awareness that we were a group of six grown-ups, primarily seeking an experience tailored for adults, while remaining receptive to Disney’s storytelling activities and opportunities. Our accommodations were located at the front of the ship on deck 7. This choice was made because the spa, gym, and Quiet Cove, which is the adults-only pool, were situated above us on deck 11. In contrast, the show theatre and movie theatre were positioned below us on decks 3 and 4.

Another section of the ship intended for adults was the entertainment and nightlife district, Europa, located on deck 4. This area was designed with a European travel theme and included several venues: the Tube, a dance club and lounge; La Piazza, an Italian-themed lounge centered around a carousel-shaped bar; O’Gills Pub, a traditional Irish sports bar; Skyline, a bar featuring digital “windows” that provide panoramic views of renowned European city skylines; and Ooh La La, a sophisticated champagne bar styled after Paris. There were plenty of spaces available for adults.

After thorough consideration, we opted to request a dinner reservation for 8:15 pm. Although not all members of our group were satisfied with this choice, the majority believed that a later time, rather than 5:45 pm, would lead to a quieter environment with fewer children and a more relaxed pace. This assumption turned out to be correct. We typically finished our meals around 10:00 pm, which gave us the ideal time to dine and converse. Our most enjoyable moments during the cruise were spent discussing our day and sharing our thoughts over dinner.

Life Onboard the Disney Fantasy

Overall, our daily itineraries centered on sharing meals, disembarking to visit the beach, indulging in spa treatments, working out at the gym, participating in various recreational activities, and enjoying the evening entertainment. Our days were fully packed, structured around what could be characterized as standard cruise experiences. Disney storytelling was intricately integrated into the activities, the restaurant themes, and certainly the entertainment. Naturally, there was a constant backdrop of music from Disney films, and we encountered ongoing character meet-and-greets at every location we visited. We regarded the Disney theming as a delightful enhancement, akin to what we had encountered in the parks.

In what ways did this experience differ from a standard cruise, like those we had with Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruise Lines? While certain aspects were more enjoyable, many elements were comparable to, or less favorable than, those we encountered with other cruise lines.

Dining and Food

Food consistently serves as a significant point of comparison among various cruise lines. Overall, we found the main entrees to be very tasty and well prepared. They exceeded our experiences with Carnival, NCL, and Royal Caribbean, although they did not fully reach the allure of Celebrity’s globally inspired, adult-oriented cuisine. The appetizers were varied, presenting a broad spectrum of flavors, while the desserts were the best we have experienced on any cruise ship. The quality of the food was above average, rich in flavor, and consistently well presented. For our evening meals, we exclusively dined in the main dining room and did not venture into any of the adults-only specialty restaurants.

Our Disney cruise ship, the Fantasy, offered a unique dining experience through its rotational dining system, which meant that we cycled through three distinctively themed main restaurants each night, while our dedicated waitstaff remained consistent. Like many cruise lines, they took the time to understand our preferences, allergies, and drink selections, providing us with exceptionally personalized service in a new setting each night. Each restaurant boasted its own exclusive menu, and the ambiance within the dining area evolved as our meal unfolded.

One of our most unforgettable evenings took place at Animators’s Palate, where the turtle, Crush, from the movie Finding Nemo, appeared on a large screen above our table. Our daughter and son-in-law became part of the entertainment as the animated character engaged with them. The lively exchange and playful antics resulted in plenty of laughter. It was an incredibly entertaining and unforgettable experience that we have not encountered anywhere else.

Alongside our primary dining experience, we also had both lunch and dinner each day at Cabanas, a buffet-style restaurant styled with a beach-like ambiance. We found the selection and quality of the food to be satisfactory. There was a wide array of seafood options; however, the buffet space was somewhat limited and frequently congested, making it crowded during breakfast and lunch.

One morning, we opted for breakfast at the Royal Court, but we did not find it better than the buffet. I regarded the breakfast and lunch selections as acceptable, yet only average to below average compared to other cruise lines. Cabanas lacked a salad bar, had restricted sandwich choices, and offered limited ethnic food options. Overall, breakfast and lunch were rather unremarkable, simply adequate.

On Deck 11, there was a separate area called Flo’s Cafe, a quick-service food court that offered burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and taco bowls. We never chose to dine there, but we did occasionally grab a slice of pizza.

Cabins and Ship Design

People often compare the cabins and the design of cruise ships. Launched in 2012, the Disney Fantasy is a member of Disney’s Dream class of vessels. This ship can accommodate a maximum of 4,000 passengers (2,500 at standard double occupancy), with a crew of approximately 1,450. The Fantasy’s design evoked the elegance of a classic 1930s ocean liner, blended with traditional Disney aesthetics. On the exterior, the ship features the fleet’s characteristic black, white, red, and yellow color palette – a subtle nod to Mickey Mouse – along with an Art Nouveau-inspired interior design that flows from the grand staircase and fluted columns of the three-deck atrium to the classically designed staterooms.

Our balcony stateroom was pleasant, albeit traditional in its decor. It offered 200 square feet of interior space and a 40-square-foot balcony. The room felt comparable to other balcony accommodations we have experienced on various vessels. One feature we appreciated was the separation of the shower and toilet into distinct rooms, each equipped with a sink. The shower was placed in a tub, likely to cater to families with young children. Overall, our room was comfortable, outfitted with modern amenities, and tastefully designed.

Activities and Movies

Another factor often evaluated when it comes to cruises is the assortment of activities. Throughout the day, a diverse range of experiences was available. The majority of these activities were centered around Disney themes, such as trivia contests, animation drawing classes, character meet-and-greets, bingo games, and a variety of artistic pursuits. Typically, each activity featured a session tailored for children and a distinct one for adults. We found the uniquely Disney-themed activities to be well presented and enjoyable.

Late each night, our daughter and her husband took advantage of a distinctive feature offered by Disney cruises. The ship provided easy access to a wide array of Disney movies and programming. Each stateroom was equipped with televisions that featured an extensive library of Disney films and shows. In contrast, my wife and I experienced a unique venue that we had not encountered on other cruise lines: the Buena Vista Movie Theatre, which showcased a selection of Disney classics as well as newly released films currently in theaters. All of us made the most of the full-sized movie theater. My wife and I enjoyed watching The Devil Wears Prada 2 while our family members selected different films. To our surprise, the theater was never crowded. Typically, only a small number of guests were present to watch movies.

Pirate Night

On the third evening of our voyage, we partook in the Pirate Night festivities. Guests were encouraged to don pirate attire, and each participant received a Mickey Mouse pirate bandana to complement their costume. Our group fully embraced the theme, dressing up for the occasion. We took photographs in our outfits, enjoyed the special pirate-themed menu at the restaurant, and joined the gathering on the pool deck for a Jack Sparrow pirate show and the fireworks at sea finale, an experience we had only encountered many years earlier on a different cruise line. Pirate Night was a thoroughly delightful experience.

Entertainment

For me, a significant aspect of comparison is always entertainment. I take pleasure in the nightly performances, and I have a fondness for the times when cruise ships would present full-length Broadway shows featuring singers, magicians, acrobats, and various other acts. The theatrical presentations at the Walt Disney Theatre each evening were outstanding, even though the performances were not full Broadway productions. Undoubtedly, this represented the best selection of shows we have experienced on a cruise ship. The main productions included Aladdin, Frozen, and Believe. The quality was impressively high, and the talent was superb. The nightly entertainment in the main theatre was undoubtedly a highlight of the cruise.

Nassau and Excursions

Port destinations play a significant role in selecting a cruise line. Cruise operators strive to offer distinctive experiences, including access to private island beaches. Our 5-day journey commenced with a visit to Nassau in the Bahamas. My wife and I have visited Nassau no fewer than ten times before, having thoroughly explored both the city and the island. Despite not having made any prior reservations, we chose to disembark from the ship to visit the Straw Market. My wife takes pleasure in shopping for Caribbean-style summer dresses during our cruises.

The remainder of our family signed up for a six-hour scuba diving training and experience. Unfortunately, the service provider did not arrive. Consequently, they felt quite let down. The Disney staff conveyed their apologies, provided a refund, and eventually proposed an alternative excursion at no extra charge on one of the private islands. Our family members planned a parasailing adventure, but unfortunately, it was canceled a few days later due to adverse weather conditions.

Disney’s Private Islands

We eagerly anticipated our upcoming visits to Disney’s renowned private islands, Lookout and Castaway Cay. In all honesty, the opportunity to explore these exclusive islands attracted us to this particular itinerary and cruise ship. We had heard a great deal about the enriching experiences offered on the islands. Having previously visited the water parks at the Disney World Resort, we held high expectations.

Lookout Cay

My family regarded Lookout Cay as one of the most memorable aspects of our vacation. It was, without a doubt, the finest private island experience we have had with any cruise line. Named after a historic lighthouse, Lookout Cay is a destination for Disney Cruise Line, located on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera. It elegantly merges pristine, untouched landscapes with vibrant blue waters, pink-sand beaches, and exclusive cultural pavilions. Guests can enjoy immersive experiences such as a Bahamian Junkanoo parade, character meet-and-greets, family-friendly water areas, and an adults-only beach.

Upon disembarking from the ship, we walked along a pier that was roughly 3/4 of a mile in length to reach the island. At the end, a tram was available to take us to the beaches situated on the opposite side of the island. We opted to visit the adults-only Serenity Bay. Numerous beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels were provided. We also had lunch at Serenity Bay, which included BBQ ribs and burgers. On the day of our visit, the bar was closed due to the Bahamian elections. After spending quality time on the beach and fully enjoying the crystal-clear water, we began our return journey. On our way back, we were fortunate to witness the Bahamian Junkanoo parade. This experience was undoubtedly the most beautiful and perfect beach outing we have ever had during a cruise.

Castaway Cay

On the morning of our arrival at Castaway Cay, we were met with heavy rainfall. The parasailing excursion scheduled for our family was canceled, leaving us uncertain about our prospects for enjoying the beach. Fortunately, by around 11 am, the weather began to improve. After that, the sun shone brightly until later in the afternoon.

Disney’s Castaway Cay serves as an exclusive Bahamian retreat for cruise guests, offering a blend of relaxation and adventure. The island showcases a distinctly Disney storytelling aesthetic, featuring pristine white sand beaches, clear blue waters, and designated areas for both families and adults. Guests can enjoy a variety of recreational activities across the island, open-air dining by the beach, and participate in events such as the Castaway Cay 5K.

A tram system allows for easy travel across the 1,000-acre island. Beyond the beach, the area provides port adventures such as bike rentals, parasailing, and snorkeling in a netted lagoon filled with marine life and hidden treasures. We decided to visit the adults-only beach at Serenity Bay, which shares its name with Lookout Cay. Getting there required two tram rides. Serenity Bay is positioned at the far end of the island’s runway and is distinctly separated from the family zones. We observed that this area was not as well-maintained as the rest of the resort. To us, the facility seemed like an afterthought. We spent a significant amount of time searching for towel stations, but we could not find any. The beach conditions were rougher, and the swimming areas were quite shallow.

The staff appeared preoccupied with prioritizing guests in the cabanas. Even the food station lacked proper maintenance, and while the menu resembled Lookout Cay’s, the food quality seemed subpar and neglected. In summary, we were not impressed with Serenity Bay at Castaway Cay. Perhaps our experience would have been more favorable had we opted for one of the other beaches. The only highlight of our visit was observing a stingray gracefully swim by while we were in the water. We found that Lookout Cay offered a significantly better Disney beach experience for adults.

Searching for the Disney Magic

Upon reviewing my account of our shared experiences, it appears that our cruise was quite successful, and we all enjoyed ourselves. This was indeed the case; however, we collectively felt that something was lacking. We engaged in extensive discussion about our adventures, and we contemplated whether our expectations had been set too high or whether we were anticipating distinctive experiences we had not encountered before. Where was the Disney magic that is frequently promised in advertisements?

After careful consideration and extensive dialogue, I have come to realize that there exists a certain quality inherent in a Disney experience that is challenging to articulate, yet undeniably tangible. It is that moment when both children and adults embrace the fantasy world of a place that feels magical. Anyone who has visited a Disney park is familiar with this sensation. It cannot be duplicated; it is unique to Disney

While my wife and I were in line to see the show Frozen, I gained a deeper understanding of the Disney phenomenon. Outside the Walt Disney Theatre, in front of a large portrait of Walt Disney, cast members were hosting a picture meet-and-greet with Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I observed two young children approach Belle, their faces filled with delight and wonder at the opportunity to be in her presence. The awe in their eyes and their excitement at meeting a Disney princess were palpable. They truly believed they were encountering the real Belle. With tender hands, they touched her gown and embraced her gently. As Belle sat down, the children perched on the edge of her dress on the floor while the photographer captured the moment. As a father, I found this a breathtaking experience that resonated deeply with me.

I recall the days when my children were young, when they embodied the same innocence. I understand the significance of such experiences for both them and me. It is impossible to assign a monetary value to what this means to a parent. This is the kind of magic a Disney cruise offers families. As adults, we relished the cruise and the delightful Disney elements. It was both enjoyable and nostalgic. However, it was challenging to reconnect with the era when the stories of our youth felt genuine, and the images we witnessed on movie screens came to life.

Would We Take Another Disney Cruise Without Children?

Would we embark on another Disney cruise? We would consider it if grandchildren were included in our party, but we are not likely to rush back solely for an adult experience. It is not that anything was particularly negative; in fact, the majority of our experiences were quite pleasant. Moreover, our enjoyment was generally not diminished by the significant number of children aboard the ship. However, other cruise lines offer more adult-curated experiences. Additionally, we believe that when we desire a Disney experience, the Disney theme parks and resorts offer a wider range of immersive options.

Final Verdict

Going back to my initial question, is it worthwhile to take a Disney cruise without children? Absolutely, you can enjoy a very good cruise. At the same time, many of the premium features offered by Disney Cruises can be found on other cruise lines at a more reasonable cost. If you appreciate being immersed in Disney’s storytelling, you will likely enjoy the cruise. You may also find pleasure in seeing many people enjoying an experience that aims to bring families together. Additionally, you will likely find it easy to overlook the subpar and average experiences.

I can confirm that you will receive excellent service and entertainment that will leave a lasting impression. You might also discover breathtaking destinations while feeling as though you are in a floating extension of a Disney theme park. Ultimately, the answer hinges on what you enjoy in a cruise experience and the extent of your enjoyment of Disney immersion.
