Travel to New Caledonia - A Little Part of France in the South Pacific (Podcast)

Hear about travel to New Caledonia as the Amateur Traveler talks to CJ Johnson from the MOVIELAND ABC Radio Show and Podcast about his recent trip to this part of France in the South Pacific.

CJ says of New Caledonia, “The reason we chose to go to New Caledonia is that my little daughter is going to the French school here in Sydney. I am a francophile. I speak some pretty good French. I wanted to give her the gift of French. It just so happens that there is a part of France that is a 2-hour flight away from Sydney that is cheap and easy to get to in the South Pacific, which combines the kind of Fijian culture and France.”

“New Caledonia is France. That’s what’s so unique about it. Officially it is part of the French Unique Collectivity. They don’t use the word colony. French Laws. Its head of state is Emmanuel Macron. For example, when you go into a cafe there in the morning, everything you would expect on a French menu is what is being offered.”

This show focuses on the capital of Nouméa and the region. We talk about which beaches to visit as well as a visit to the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre to learn more about the local Malaysian culture (known as Kanak). We also visit the local market.

CJ also talks about some of the changes happening as the country votes for or against independence in 2018. The islands have 25% of the world’s nickel production so they do have resources independent of the mother country.

Come explore this pacific paradise with a French flair.

Announcing the 2018 Amateur Traveler trip – Amateur Traveler Trip to Prague, Krakow and Budapest

On United States UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Episode 480, Mike wrote

Loved the US UNESCO world heritage sites podcast with Gary the first time around and it was a delight to listen to it again today. One of the best you’ve done. It would have been nice to hear a short update at the end on the status of what were then the proposed sites and possibly new proposed sites. Also, on a different, but somewhat related note. I know Gary has been to the really remote and difficult to access National Parks in Alaska–Kobuk, Gates of the Arctic, Lake Clark and Katmai. I’d love to hear him discuss these parks and also describe the logistics of making travel to them happen. Thank you for all the great work you do.

Hi Chris. I love your podcast. Simply the best i listen to and is compulsory listening for me.
But the presenter for New Caledonia was such a disappointment even sadder that he is a fellow Aussie!
Nee Caledonia is such a wonderful country but he really never gave us much to go on. His comparisons to France and other south Pacific nations were too frequent and time consuming.
Next time I comment I will be full of praise as every other speaker has been excellent.
Keep up the great work and looking forward to hearing about the India trip as I visit their 3 times a year and love it

I wanted to say I actually loved this podcast and the guest presenter. It’s all too common to hear/see/read everything about the tourist destination that the South Pacific islands are – but much of being a responsible tourist is knowing about the local culture even if it means having an understanding of how much of the local culture is driven by the local political climate – and I feel like the guest presenter did a great job of that. Also, it’s important for westerners and people in general to know about the political climate, cultural identity issues, and perhaps small segments of strife that are playing out in remote locations like New Caledonia – where you might not hear about it otherwise unless you read the underground French newspapers. So thank you and it would be nice to keep us posted on the outcome of the New Caledonia elections.

Ellen, glad you liked it. I will try and keep an ear out for the election.
