Travel to Northeastern Florida – Jacksonville, Amelia Island and St Augustine – Episode 909

Hear about travel to Northeast Florida as the Amateur Traveler talks to Angie Orth from Angie Away about her hometown and the area around it.

Why should someone go to Northeast Florida?

Angie says, “So many reasons. People come to Florida for a lot of different reasons. Mostly theme parks, maybe swamps, alligators, Miami. Those are the things when I meet people around the world that they think Florida is about. Everybody thinks I either live in Miami, in some kind of penthouse, or like at Disney World, in a castle of some sort.”

“There’s so much to do here, but I would say the majority of it is It’s outdoors, it’s nature, it’s history. We have a ton of interesting history that even natives don’t necessarily know about. It’s hidden away in the neighborhoods and buried and there’s ruins and also layers of history, layers and hundreds of years and wars. To make this area what it is and it’s really interesting once you start going to the national park areas and the forts and the ruins.”

Angie recommends several must-see locations and activities in Northeastern Florida:

1. Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island (Nassau County):
   • Visit Fort Clinch State Park for hiking, biking, and exploring historic forts.
   • Enjoy the beaches, which are often quiet and uncrowded.
   • Enjoy one of Amelia Island’s charming bed-and-breakfasts.
2. Jacksonville:
   • Explore the neighborhoods within Duval County, which includes 22 miles of beaches, the St. Johns River, and various historical sites
   • Visit the downtown area, which has a skyline and Riverwalk.
   • Check out the Cummer Gallery of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
   • Attend a football game at the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium, which even features swimming pools.
   • Take a history of silent film tour 
3. St. Augustine (St. Johns County):
   • Visit the historic downtown, including the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the U.S.
   • Explore the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum.
   • Visit the Alligator Farm, where you can even zipline over alligator enclosures.
   • Walk across the Bridge of Lions for stunning views, especially during the Nights of Lights event.
   • Enjoy a show at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and visit the nearby Anastasia State Park.
   • For history buffs, don’t miss Fort Mose Historic State Park and Fort Matanzas National Monument.

Angie emphasizes the rich history, outdoor activities, and unique charm of Northeastern Florida, making it a region worth exploring beyond the state’s more well-known attractions.

on Travel to Castile and León, Spain – Episode 906

Hi Chris,

just traveling in Castilla, went to Burgos which I love, a great city, and decided to visit Valladolid instead of Leon as have been before.
Valladolid is a lovely city and as suggested a good base.
The sculpture museum is outstanding.
Great Cafe, IL minute.
The river of light, beware I could not find the App, and tourist information could not help, other than saying it was from 2015.
Also, note many things closed early August, which is fine for me, but if someone is traveling from USA, it is long way to discover places closed.
