Fiji Travel Guide (Podcast) - Viti Levu and Taveuni

Hear about travel to Fiji (the islands of Viti Levu and Taveuni) as the Amateur Traveler talks to Justin Barnes about his recent trip to this island nation including some pretty amazing scuba diving experiences.

When asked why someone should go to Fiji, Justin says, “Lots of sunshine, lots of green forests, lots of blue ocean, and very kind people. Some of the nicest people we’ve met anywhere on our travels around.”

When a trip to Tonga was canceled by a volcanic eruption and a COVID surge, Justin and his wife Crystal used their tickets on Fiji Airlines to visit two islands in the nation of Fiji instead.

They started on the largest island in Fiji which is Viti Levu. Viti Levu is about the same size as the Big Island of Hawaii. They flew into Nadi and took an intro tour that is also offered for people who are doing a layover there. They visited the Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu Temple, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, a market, and mud pools. Since they arrived on a Sunday, they also visited one of the local churches.

Then they boarded a bus to Pacific Harbor which is known for its adventure tours like waterfall hikes, zip lines, and ATV tours. They did a cageless shark diving experience where they peered over the edge of an underwater ridge at a group of over 100 sharks.

While on Viti Levu they also visited the capital of Suva. Here they visited Thurston Gardens, the Fiji Museum, and the Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve for another waterfall hike.

On the smaller island of Taveuni, they dove to see the soft corals of Rainbow Reef, the vertical corals and sea caves of The Wall, and the leaf-like corals of the Cabbage Patch.

On land, they hiked the Lavena Coastal Walk and hiked to some of the waterfalls of the Bouma National Heritage Park. They visited a Pearl Farm just off-shore and explored the views from Des Voeux Peak.

Whether you come for the adventure tours, the beaches, the waterfalls, or the sunsets, the people of Fiji will greet you with a hearty “Bula!”
