Travel to Amsterdam – Episode 788
categories: europe travelHear about travel to Amsterdam in the Netherlands as the Amateur Traveler talks to Jessica from AWanderlustForLife.com about her adopted home.
Jessica says, “I think a lot of people have a lot of preconceived notions about Amsterdam in regards to maybe Sin City kind of things. I think people should visit here because it is more than you can ever imagine. There’s so much more to do, from studying architecture, to museums, to the food, to the parks, outdoor things to do.”
We talk about some of the usual sites like the Rijksmuseum with the Dutch Masters, a canal cruise and a visit to the Anne Frank House, but Jessica encourages us to visit some of the quieter neighborhoods in Amsterdam like the Jordaan. In the Jordaan, you can shop at the Noordermarkt or grab a piece of Dutch Apple Pie at Winkel 43. Take a walk along the beautiful Brouwersgracht (canal).
Yes, you should take a cruise of the canals but why not explore them from different angles. Take a smaller boat cruise like the ones from Those Dam Boat Guys. The get up high to see the city laid out before you. You can do this from a few spots that Jessica suggests like SkyLounge Amsterdam, the NEMO Science Museum or the Blue Amsterdam Cafe. Then really explore the canals under your own power on a stand-up paddle-board or in a kayak.
Take in a movie with the locals at the Tuschinski theatre… don’t worry, movies are in English.
If museums are your thing there are other art museums like Van Gough Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. But why not take a food tour or a bike tour to get a picture of every day life in the city.
When you have explored the city, Jessica recommends we do an excursion out to the countryside. Some of the nearby towns that are easily accessible via public transportation include Volendam, Monnickendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland, and Edam. Here you can see windmills, pedestrian bridges, and the wide open Dutch countryside.
