Travel to Chennai India – Episode 681
categories: asia travelHear about travel to Chennai, India as the Amateur Traveler talks to Amanda from millennialtraveller.com about this city in southern India.
Amanda says, “Chennai does break a lot of stereotypes of India. It is much more of a spacious city than you would find from other cities like Delhi and Mumbai. It’s much less chaotic. Secondly, it has been ranked as one of the safest cities within India and also Southeast Asia and also one of the safest cities for a woman.”
We start exploring the city at the world’s second-largest urban beach in the world. If you get there early, you can watch the fishermen bring in their nets and get the freshest seafood. The Chennai lighthouse has a great view of the beach.
The St Thomas cathedral is dedicated to St Thomas, whose last ministry was in Chennai. The best-known Hindu temple in the area is Kapaleeshwarar Temple. You can enjoy the outside, but tourists can’t view the inmost part of the shrine.
We talk about shopping for souvenirs in the bustling shopping district of T. Nagar. We also talk about what food to order in Southern India.
Amanda recommends a road trip down the East Coast Road, including the Madras Crocodile Bank.
We also talk about a side trip to the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, which is a UNESCO site. The monuments include the Shore Temple and cave temples which date back to the 7th century. She also did a side trip to Tata Falls.
Chennai was formally known as Madras.
Learn about one of the largest cities in India and a center for culture in Southern India.
