Travel to Delhi, India – Episode 975
categories: asia travelIn this episode of the Amateur Traveler, host Chris Christensen welcomes back Jonty Crane of Jonty Travels and The Tramping Life podcast to share practical advice and favorite sights from his many visits to India’s capital, Delhi.
Delhi is intense, historic, chaotic, and endlessly fascinating.
Jonty has visited Delhi six times over the past six years and offers a grounded perspective on how to experience the city without being overwhelmed. He recommends seeing Delhi in manageable doses, mixing headline attractions with quieter parks, tombs, and neighborhoods where daily life unfolds.
The conversation begins in Old Delhi, where Jonty highlights the sensory overload of the markets and bazaars near Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque), best explored by both rickshaw and on foot. He explains what to expect when visiting the mosque, and recommends timing your visit to avoid the heat. Nearby, he recommends the Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that rewards unhurried wandering, as well as lesser-known forts, parks, and memorials east of the Red Fort that most visitors miss entirely.
Jonty discusses Delhi’s rich religious diversity, including visits to a major Sikh temple, where visitors can observe communal worship and the tradition of free shared meals, and later to massive modern Hindu complexes such as Akshardham Temple.
Moving south into New Delhi, the planned capital designed during the British era, the episode covers landmarks such as India Gate, the National Museum, and the surprisingly peaceful Lodhi Gardens, one of Jonty’s favorite places to escape the city’s intensity. He also recommends Humayun’s Tomb, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal, along with the atmospheric ruins of the Qutub Minar complex, home to Delhi’s oldest Islamic monuments and the mysterious Iron Pillar that has never rusted.
Beyond sightseeing, Jonty offers practical advice on getting around Delhi, comparing Uber, auto-rickshaws, and the highly efficient Delhi Metro, which he considers the best way to cross longer distances. He shares tips on accommodation, avoiding common scams, managing the heat and air pollution, and understanding local customs, from security checks at hotels to the realities of street life.
The episode wraps up with reflections on Delhi’s contradictions: exhausting yet exhilarating, chaotic yet deeply historic, and challenging but ultimately rewarding for travelers willing to engage with it on its own terms.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How to explore Old Delhi’s markets without feeling overwhelmed
- Which Mughal-era forts, tombs, and gardens are truly worth your time
- Where to find calm green spaces in one of the world’s largest cities
- Practical tips for transportation, accommodations, and safety
- Why Delhi is best experienced in short, focused visits rather than all at once
If you’ve ever wondered whether Delhi is “too much” for a visit, this episode breaks it down and shows how to experience the city thoughtfully, comfortably, and with curiosity.

Travel to Kansas – Amateur Traveler Episode 967
Dear Chris,
I really enjoy your podcast, and I think it is very informative. I just want to say thank you very much. Keep up the great travels and great job that you are doing. I really enjoyed the last podcast you did on the state of Kansas. I thought it was very interesting. There’s a lot more to do in that state than a lot of people think, but I really enjoy learning new things too, thanks very much, Chris. You are the best.
Best wishes,
Jeff
I want to give your podcast a shoutout. I was listening to another travel podcast with a well-known name. As destinations were discussed, the hosts repeatedly noted they had not been to the places they were discussing.
I really appreciate that either you or your guests have been to the places on each week’s itinerary and bring an authentic perspective of the destination. It makes a difference.
Thank you for all you do to keep us learning and traveling.
P.S. I hope it is also clear that I am not talking about Rick Steves, as he and his team also bring a first-hand point of view.

Chris, I thought you were too dismissive and critical of Delhi this entire episode. You did not have one good thing to say about Delhi, you constantly complained of the pollution, the traffic, the car horns, the crowds, and the scammers. The guest for this episode was graciously trying to steer the conversation highlighting the positive aspects of Delhi, but seemed like you were constantly trying to push the narrative of the negatives on him and coaxing him to only focus on those aspects. Yes, Delhi has its issues, but so do many cities on this planet, and there is a reason it is considered a cultural and architectural marvel. I would suggest – if you just need to bash a city on this show, please do not feature it in an episode.

I do remember sayings specifically, “Despite me starting with a negative comment on Delhi, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll put a link, for instance, to some of the historic places that I went in Delhi”, if I may quote from the transcript.
