Travel to Southern Florida – Miami, The Everglades, The Florida Keys, Key West – Episode 617
categories: USA TravelHear about travel to South Florida (Miami, Everglades National Park, and the Florida Keys) as the Amateur Traveler talks to Erik Smith from onmyfeetorinmymind.com about this diverse region.
On Miami, Erik says, “Miami is one of those places that has a larger than life reputation. You hear about South Beach and all the celebrities that live there and the beautiful people. Miami Beach is famous for that as well. The most famous neighborhood in Miami is Little Havana which is every bit as good as you think.”
We talk about food tours, art deco architecture, and neighborhoods in transition like Wynwood with the art project, the Wynwood Walls. Miami can be all about nightlife, water sports, beach, architecture, history, food, or your favorite combination.
We don’t have to get very far away from Miami to get into the wild in the Everglades. Eric talks about different places you can take kayak tours, hikes, or a slough slog where you are definitely going to get wet. He also heads a bit off the trail to visit an old Nike missile site preserved in the National Park.
We then hit the road and drive to the end of Highway 1 down the Florida Keys to Key West. Along the way, we suggest stops to visit a bird sanctuary, ride on the original African Queen, visit a fossilized coral quarry, and a diving museum. The Florida Keys are one of the iconic road trips in the United States.
When you get to the end of the road, get ready to party because Key West is a fun, if not always a family-friendly destination. There is history there, like Truman’s little white house, Hemingway’s house, and Fort Zachery Taylor. There is also a great assortment of good food, bars, and nightlife. Take the very touristy Conch Train to learn more about the Conch Republic and see some of the back streets of the city.
We then go past the end of the road out to Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson, which is one of the largest brick forts in the United States on an island in the Gulf of Mexico.
South Florida has a lot to offer whether you are looking to camp under dark skies, sip a tropical drink while the sun sets, or party until the dawn.
