Serbia Travel – Episode 643
categories: europe travelHear about travel to Serbia as the Amateur Traveler talks to Stephanie Craig and Allison Green from sofiaadventures.com about one of the Balkan countries that they love.
Stephanie says, “Over the last two and a half years I have gone to every country in the Balkans and gotten to see the differences. I think that Serbia is a country that, outside of real travel enthusiasts, people just don’t know anything about and it’s amazing”.
They recommend that if you only have 3-5 days focus on Belgrade the capital and day trips from there.
But you could also travel to Novi Sad which is the European Capital of Culture for 2021. It was listed by Lonely Planet as one of the best cities to travel to in 2019. “Novi Sad is a beautiful Art Nouveau city with colorful buildings”, a beautiful cathedral, and it’s very different from the rest of Serbia because it was part of the Austria Hungarian empire.
Allison says the town of Subotica is “probably one of the most beautiful towns in Europe that no one has ever heard of. It has one of the most gorgeous synagogues I have ever seen and a beautiful palace. It is really small, really quiet.” Both Novi Sad and Subotica are easy day trips from Belgrade in this compact country.
They start us on a free walking tour of Belgrade with a stop at Hotel Moskva for a piece of Moskva Snit which is a cherry almond cake. You can get it with a wine pairing. Make s stop at the nearby Zeleni Venac Market as well.
They recommend walking around a couple of neighborhoods: Dor?ol and Skadarlija. Dor?ol includes the Belgrade fortress and lots of great international food and coffee shops. Skadarlija is a cobblestoned neighborhood with cafes and kafanas that serve Serbian coffee and some food.
Before you leave the capital, pay your respects to former leader Tito at the House of Flowers which is his mausoleum. In Novi Beograd (New Belgrade) you can find a memorial to a concentration camp that was there. This is one of several WWII memorial sites that Stephanie and Allison recommend visiting.
3 of the 5 UNESCO sites in Serbia are monasteries: Sopo?ani, Studenica, and Gra?anica.
They also recommend a couple of places to get out into nature in Serbia: Tara National Park, Uvac River Canyon, and Lake Palic.
Serbia is a small country that can easily be tackled in a week to two weeks. Learn the history, taste the food and enjoy your visit to Serbia.
