In this solo episode of Amateur Traveler, Chris shares an in-depth look at an eight-night adventure cruise through the fjords, glaciers, capes, and wildlife of southern Patagonia aboard Ventus Australis. The route combines two four-night segments, sailing from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina, and back again, providing double the opportunities to explore remote landscapes reached only by Zodiac.
What This Episode Covers
• Understanding Patagonia
Chris opens with an overview of Patagonia’s geography, the island of Tierra del Fuego, and the immense glaciated landscapes that define this southernmost corner of South America. Unlike large-ship cruises, this expedition cruise stays almost entirely below the South American continent, weaving through rugged, isolated islands.
• About the Ship: Ventus Australis
An expedition-class vessel designed specifically for Patagonia:
- Capacity around 200 passengers, fewer on Chris’s sailing
- No casino, no TV, no internet: a focus on lectures, learning, and wilderness
- Twice Daily Zodiac excursions
- Multilingual presentations in English, Spanish, and French
- Comfortable cabins with large windows for glacier viewing
• The Adventure Begins: Punta Arenas
After flying into Punta Arenas and spending the night (at the Cape Horn Hotel, owned by Australis), Chris and his wife board Ventus Australis. Passengers attend orientation briefings and meet multilingual guides who will lead hikes and zodiac outings throughout the voyage.
Daily Experiences & Excursions
Ainsworth Bay
First land excursion: choose between a strenuous hike on a moraine or a forest walk focused on the fascinating story of how life returns after glacial retreat.
Highlights include:
- Firebush, winter’s bark, calafate berries
- “Indian bread” fungus eaten by the Yamana people
- The ecological havoc caused by the introduced Canadian beavers
Tucker’s Islets
A Zodiac-only wildlife excursion to view:
- Magellanic penguins
- Cormorants with bright blue eyes
Glacier Days
Pía Glacier
One of the voyage’s major highlights. Three exploration choices:
- A more strenuous boulders hike
- A lookout hike
- A coastal walk close to the glacier face
Chris explains the scale of the glacier and the geology behind the surrounding valleys, plus the audible cracking of ice echoing through the fjord.
Glacier Alley
Sailing past five named glaciers (Romanche, Alemania, Francia, Italia, Holanda) in quick succession. Onboard, themed drinks and snacks match each country, a festive and visually spectacular evening.
Attempting Cape Horn
Cape Horn landings are always weather-dependent.
Attempt #1: Winds reaching 58–72 knots make zodiac operations impossible, so the landing is canceled—common for this region. Chris also shares his one bout of seasickness and how to avoid it.
Ushuaia Stopover
Travelers disembarking can explore Ushuaia, while round-trip guests can wander the town’s cafés, art markets, and waterfront before reboarding for part two of the journey.
Return Voyage & Second Chance at Cape Horn
Wulaia Bay
A culturally rich landing site important to the Yamana (Yámana) people.
Experiences include:
- Visiting a former Chilean Navy outpost, now a museum
- Learning about Yamana canoe culture, survival techniques, and tragic history
- Hikes ranging from easy to strenuous
- Gorgeous views of forests, fjords, and mountains
Cape Horn – Successful Landing
On the return trip, conditions allow a late-day landing at the legendary Cape Horn.
Travelers climb wooden stairs to:
- The Albatross memorial
- The lighthouse is staffed by a Chilean family
- A tiny chapel
A powerful moment at the literal edge of South America.
More Glaciers: Pía, Porter, and Condor
Pía Glacier (Again)
A dramatically different experience than the first visit, continuous calving with massive icefalls.
Porter Glacier
A Zodiac-only excursion into a steep valley lined with waterfalls and wind-funneled gusts. Chris describes understanding glacial geology by observing multiple medial and lateral moraines.
Condor Glacier
A favorite among guides. Smooth waters, lush canyon walls, waterfalls, and brilliant blue ice.
Chris also captures wildlife interactions, including cormorants and a curious caracara.
Aguila Glacier
A beach landing followed by a trail along a lagoon formed by glacial retreat. One of the wetter Zodiac disembarkations during the trip.
Magdalena Island: Penguin Paradise
Final excursion: a 45-minute loop walk through thousands of nesting Magellanic penguins.
A stark difference from earlier penguin sightings—here the colony surrounds you, calls echoing across the island.
Life Onboard
Chris shares detailed insights about:
- Meals, including Chilean wines and a Thanksgiving-inspired pork tenderloin
- The open bar and ever-available espresso, hot chocolate, and snacks
- The multilingual bridge and engine room tours
- The cozy lounges and panoramic observation decks
- What to pack (layers, waterproof gear, hiking boots, adapters)
Practical Tips for Future Travelers
- No internet or cell signal except near ports: embrace the digital detox
- Pack waterproof layers and warm hats, gloves, and pants
- Bring binoculars and a good zoom lens for wildlife
- Zodiac landings require mobility and comfort stepping into moving boats
- No hidden costs: excursions, drinks, and meals are included
- Round-trip cruises provide a second chance at weather-dependent stops like Cape Horn
